Fred is a fairly complex boy and does have very specific needs but we’re confident that finding him the perfect permanent home is the best thing for Fred’s long term wellbeing and will give him the best chance at being as happy as he can be.
Fred, born in June 2020, is a handsome golden retriever with a bright mind and the potential to be a deeply rewarding companion for the right owners. While he has specific needs, Fred offers loyalty and affection to those he trusts.
Once he forms a bond, Fred enjoys being in your company, often settling by your side. He’s a quick learner, understands basic commands, and is highly motivated by food, making training a positive and rewarding experience. Engaging his intelligence through scent work and puzzle toys is a particular joy for him. He is reliably house-trained and does not tend to chew or damage things indoors. Fred is also a good traveller in the car and has a real enthusiasm for water, truly loving any opportunity to splash, swim, and retrieve rocks.
Fred requires a particular type of home due to his anxieties and past experiences. He can be reactive towards strangers and needs his personal space respected. Therefore, Fred needs an adult-only home without children. He also exhibits reactivity towards other dogs on walks and can be dominant in their presence, making a single-dog household the most suitable environment. While he cohabited peacefully with a guinea pig, his strong prey drive necessitates caution around other small animals, including cats.
Fred needs experienced owners who understand dog reactivity and are prepared for consistent, positive reinforcement training. Ongoing work will be required on his leash manners and recall, meaning he must be kept on a lead in public and will benefit from a securely fenced garden. His new family will also need to continue his muzzle training patiently, as this is a valuable tool for his management.
Fred has hip dysplasia requiring daily medication. Fred’s medication is funded by IRR.
He dislikes bath-time and grooming and can express his discomfort, so gentle and consistent handling, potentially with professional advice, will be important. He can also experience separation anxiety, so a home where his owners are initially present more often and can gradually build his confidence when alone will be beneficial.
Fred’s journey has led him to require a specific environment where his anxieties can be managed and his potential realised. He needs patient, understanding, and experienced owners who can provide him with a predictable and secure life. To summarise, Fred needs an adult-only household with a solid understanding of reactive dogs, a commitment to ongoing training and management, and the ability to offer him the stable and loving forever home he deserves. Fred has much to offer the right people.
