Nana came into my life quite by accident. In April, someone put a post up on Facebook asking for help. She was in the Pound. A brilliant Dog Pound that works with Rescues. When I rang I asked about the old Chocolate lab, there wasn’t one.’ Are you sure, I asked, ‘yes’, was the reply, ‘but I am looking at her’. ‘Ah now, Kathryn, what glasses do you have on? She’s a Brindle Staffie’. ‘Oh….. wonderful’, She’s old, about 13 we think and has a thousand things wrong with her. She has had a hard life and needs to put on loads of weight. She was begging for food, going from shop to shop. Her bones are sticking out everywhere and she has been with us three weeks. She is miserable.’ ‘What’s she like with other dogs?’ ‘Brilliant!!’ ‘Book her into the vet, get her teeth done and whatever else needs doing, I will pay them. She’s coming home’. What? but IRR doesn’t take Staffies!’ ‘Well let’s say she got us at hello’.

The first night she didn’t know what to make of a soft bed and a warm fire. She kept staring at me and then started to cry, tears rolling down her face, snuffling.

The first night she didn’t know what to make of a soft bed and a warm fire. She kept staring at me and then started to cry, tears rolling down her face, snuffling. It’s been a long time since I have seen a dog cry, I was terrified. I rang the Dog Warden and she said that she was like that for three weeks. Perhaps she realised that for the last 13 years what she had suffered was not what she should of endured, or maybe it was gratitude. I don’t know. I have had many fosters but Nana (named after my beloved grandmother who loved and cared for everyone and who had time for the world and his wife) is super special. She reminds me of ET trying to fit in at Halloween with his Halloween outfit. She has the biggest heart, the kindest soul, the most protective of the family. She is the ‘go-to girl’ if anyone is feeling low or in need of a little reassurance. She is great for putting dogs in their place but in a sort of a ‘mother knows best’ attitude. She sleeps with pups or old dogs who are finding it hard to fit in or dogs who have had to have surgery. She is the epitome of a ‘Great Soul’ in tune with life around her.

It is said that Pound Dogs are millionaire dogs in disguise. I have to say that no one enquired about her in the Pound. Well, their loss was my enormous gain. She has more than repaid me with whatever I give her. She is mischievous, and dances when she sees me. Her tail doesn’t go from side to side but around like a helicopter. I will be forever grateful I have her as she came into my life at a difficult time, having lost so many dogs in the last little while. She is a pocket rocket. She is a total sweetie and has more than lived up to her namesake, Nana. What a perfect name for such a perfect little dog.
